Division. When you taught subtraction you used addition to clearly emphasize the missing quantities, so in teaching division you should also make use of multiplication. You can also make use of food to show the concept like having a bag of cookies and asking them to divide the cookies among themselves. Aside from teaching them division you are also teaching them the value of sharing.
This problem is not really prevalent in the first years at school, where math is relatively easy and considered fun. But after a brief and relaxed honeymoon period, the going will get tough in later years. After the introduction of multiplication tables in the first two school years, students are required to memorize these tables accurately and above all to recite them without thinking. Too many students, however, will rely on their addition skills and will not be able to recite the multiplication facts quickly enough.
Math has always been a passion for me, even as a little kid. It wasn´t until that I got to college and enrolled in pre-calculus, then, the problems started arising. I was so filled with pride that I can do math in my head with ease that I started to forget the basic principles of algebra. I struggled for most of the semester and then came the most difficult decision of all, I withdrew from the course. After another attempt at the class, I had the same problem again. It wasn´t until later that I developed a plan that will help me succeed in my math courses.
The best way to treat many math problems is to first find the source of the problem and to adapt the instruction to concentrate on weak areas. Regular at-home math practice is absolutely critical during the first few years of a child´s education, as at-home practice will serve to reinforce concepts and to allow children to move along at a faster pace. Practice is especially important during the holidays, the summer and during other breaks in a child´s school year.
Math is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the world. When you try to teach a child to learn math, they would get a puzzled look, as they are trying to process of how numbers work and how problems add up. My daughter, when she started learning math, she would have a hard time trying to visualize how math problems add up or take away. It took a lot of time and hard work just to get her to understand how math works.
Calculators have been infiltrating elementary schools for years, depriving children of the experience of learning vital mental skills. There´s no need for calculators for even large division problems. Certainly nothing an elementary school-age child will ever be faced with should require a calculator.
Let your child help with baking some cookies. Let him do the measuring of the ingredients but ask him to double the ingredients so that you can bake two batches with one mixing. For example, if your recipe calls for 3/4 cup of flour for one batch then you can have your child compute for how many cups he needs to make 2 batches and without using the same size of measuring cup your child will have to compute for the quantity of flour he has to measure. In this example he will have to have 1 and 1/2 cup of flour to make two batches of cookies.
